Red Sox pressure does not stop with the middle order

Sonny Gray is listed to start on regular rest, with no current physical concern reported. His latest outing featured some firm contact and a home run, but he still completed a normal workload after a command-led scoreless start in Pittsburgh.
Gray wins through sequencing rather than radar-gun theater: sinker, four-seamer and cutter set up the curveball and sweeper. Miami’s contact hitters can make him work, but the Marlins must avoid chasing the sweeper before Gray is forced back over the plate.

The edge lies in who must cover the middle innings
The case for Boston is not simply Gray over Gusto. It is the chain reaction created if Gray supplies length while Gusto needs an early hook.
Boston can pressure Gusto from both sides of the plate, and its lower order has recently produced competitive, ball-in-play at-bats. Every extended inning moves the game closer to a Miami bullpen missing Fairbanks and still sorting out its leverage order.
The moneyline is the right fit because this park can preserve a narrow score even when one club owns the cleaner matchup. Boston does not need to manufacture a multi-run cushion; it only needs its deeper route through the game to hold.
Boston’s late-inning risk is Chapman’s recent mileage, particularly if he was needed again Tuesday. That uncertainty can keep the finale tight, but it does not erase Miami’s larger problem of covering Gusto’s remaining innings without an established closer.
