One Player Is Climbing, One Is Slipping Away
Gibson's North American summer has a rhythm to it. She beat Maja Chwalinska 7-5 6-1 in Toronto after adjusting to the slices and drops, then reversed a set against Lilli Tagger and won a tight decider in Cincinnati. Against Sabalenka she erased five match points before losing the tiebreak — the ball was coming off her racquet clean and early.
Vekic's summer runs the other way. Golubic, Xinyu Wang, Diane Parry — all three took the opening set off her and all three lost it back, then watched her fade. In Monterrey she held the first game of the decider and did not win another; the first serve went, and with it the whole shape of her tennis.
Where the Second Set Decides It
Vekic will strike first. Her serve-plus-one still bites, and Gibson's own delivery wobbled badly in Philadelphia, where she stacked up double faults against Lizette Cabrera. That is the honest risk here.
But this match is likely to be long, and long is exactly where Vekic has been coming apart. Gibson's backhand absorbs flat pace and sends it back deeper, and she plays freer when she is chasing than when she is protecting.
