Gauff and Sakkari meet in Toronto after both came through their opening matches. Gauff is the deserved favourite on class, speed and return quality. The line, however, asks her to win by five games or more, which is a different proposition entirely.
One player is fresh, the other is in rhythm
This is Gauff's first event after the grass block and a pause, and it shows in the details. Her opening match here, against an opponent from outside the top 100, brought a stack of double faults and a disjointed second set. On grass she made a habit of dropping the first set before sorting the match out.
Sakkari is in her best playing shape for some time. A week in Athens took her to the final without losing a set, and her Toronto opener was controlled: an early break went against her and was retrieved immediately, before it could turn into anything.
Why the cushion is the weak point
Gauff wins these matchups by returning one extra ball and making rallies physically expensive. Sakkari has lost her decisiveness in exactly that pattern in each of their last three meetings, and again late in the Athens final, so backing her outright is not the play.
What she does still have, in this condition, is her serve and her first strike, which should be worth a solid share of games. 6:4 6:4 or a Gauff win in three sets both clear the handicap comfortably.
Prediction: Sakkari +4.5 games, odds 2.045
