Rinderknech and Nakashima meet in the Round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Montreal, on hard court. The rankings put them at 29 and 31, effectively the same shelf. The market disagrees: 1.438 on the American against 2.887 on the Frenchman.
Fresh legs against a fuller schedule
Nakashima has been the steadier of the two for weeks. A deep run at Queen's, then a semifinal in Washington with wins over de Minaur and Mensik, and his work with Ferreira has made him more willing to finish points at the net. The cost is written into the calendar: Washington rolled straight into Montreal, and the third round took him two and a half hours against Droguet.
Rinderknech arrived at this match having spent less than an hour on court, courtesy of Tiafoe's withdrawal. At 196 cm he serves in blocks of twenty-plus aces, plays first-strike tennis and comes forward often enough to break an opponent's rhythm. Against Kecmanovic in Montreal, and against Djokovic at Wimbledon where he took a set, he responded to losing a set by raising the risk rather than folding.
The case for +2.5 games
This shapes up as a run of holds with few return openings, decided by two or three points per set. Nakashima's cleaner baseline structure justifies favouritism, but he has no obvious tool to dismantle that serve, and he can drift into passivity in front: at Queen's against Cerundolo he dropped four games in a row and the semifinal with them.
The handicap covers both a Rinderknech win and any narrow defeat, which is how his matches tend to finish. At close to even money that is the better side of this line.
Prediction: Rinderknech +2.5 games, odds 1.98
