Clean wins, difficult holds

Volynets beat Kamilla Rakhimova 6-3, 6-0 after putting sustained pressure on an unreliable serve. She gave away little against Elvina Kalieva, too, and her depth has been dependable since her Philadelphia title. Birrell will have to finish points rather than expect short errors.

Birrell’s Seoul wins have required more adjustment. She recovered from 3-0 down in the second set against Tamara Zidanšek, then beat Yexin Ma 7-5, 6-3. She played Ma on Thursday, a shorter turnaround than Volynets had, but there has been no reported physical concern.

Birrell has room to stay close

Volynets is the rightful favourite on recent form. Still, her emphatic Seoul scores came against opponents ranked below Birrell, who is No. 60 and has shown she can work through a difficult set. At the US Open, she saved match point against Petra Marčinko and later took a set from Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Volynets’ return may make Birrell’s service games uncomfortable. The handicap does not require Birrell to avoid that trouble; it requires her to limit the damage. Her recent recoveries make +4.5 games the better way to back a competitive quarterfinal.
