Pronostics pour Leylah Annie Fernandez — Maja Chwalinska

The line gives too much weight to Leylah Fernandez’s hard-court reputation and too little to what Maja Chwalinska has rebuilt this week. Her summer slump came while she was regaining match sharpness after injury; her coach says each win is restoring decision-making and confidence. Singapore’s slow court lets her spin work.

The 6-2, 6-2 win over Elise Mertens showed the range: slice, topspin, sudden pace, drop shots and lobs. Chwalinska went from tentative to commanding against Rebecca Sramkova, then took the initiative against Oleksandra Oliynykova.

Fernandez’s win over Mirra Andreeva is the week’s best result, but Andreeva made plenty of errors and fought back to 5-5 in the second set before Fernandez closed. Fernandez has also made four to seven double faults per round and won just 9 of 24 second-serve points against Andreeva. There is a caveat to Chwalinska’s best win: Mertens had not played earlier in the week. Still, Chwalinska’s growing assurance on this court makes the upset more plausible than the price suggests, so Maja Chwalinska to win is the play. Fernandez’s depth and her Andreeva result remain the danger.
