Three matches in a week against two weeks of nothing
Vidmanova has the better recent body of work: a run to her first tour final in Memphis, with wins over Stephens and Volynets along the way, then two qualifying wins here. The last of them, a near two-hour three-setter against Udvardy, was also a reminder of her habit — she surrendered the second set almost in full before restarting.
Birrell has no winning rhythm at all. Her serve came apart in Cincinnati, and before that she was losing tight first sets rather than uncompetitive ones, taking Golubic and Ma to tiebreaks. She also has the Wimbledon precedent of climbing back after a lopsided set, which matters more than her results table suggests.
Where the games accumulate
Both second serves are exploitable, so breaks should travel in both directions rather than in one. Vidmanova's first serve is her weapon and her fatigue risk, and this is her third match in heavy Monterrey conditions.
Over 21.5 survives a 6-4 7-5 or a 7-6 6-4 as comfortably as it survives any deciding set. The one genuine threat is a repeat of the Cincinnati service collapse from Birrell inside 70 minutes.
